Speaking of pronunciation...

I want the final word on "Samasthiti" (I KNOW I am not spelling it right, so in the words of the comedian, Judy Gold, who is also a mom at my kids' school and who hosts the charity benefit there each year, "Shut the f--- up"). HOW is this word pronounced? I have heard Guruji say "Sa-MAS-ti-TI", and I would think that would be the way to go. But I have heard Sharon Gannon say "Samas-TEE-Tee". And I am sure I have heard countless others, including "Sa-mas-ti-hee-tee-tee".

So, someone out there...please shed light!

And that reminds me: Is it "Par-Vree-Tee" or "Par-Vree-Ta"?
Is it "SHVAnasana" or "Svanasana"?
Is it "ooordva" or "Erdva"?

I think I know the answers, but maybe not so much?

Feel free to chime in.

I hear you on the last three, but not sure about the first one, although you did spend three months with "the man", so, I should definitely defer to you....

You spelled it write,rite, right
Too bad spell check doesn't do sanskrit.

Susan...I think that the anonymous of the "Accch" post (I did not count the C's, so I probably misspelled that too!) was not Chris...I think that the anonymous poster was RESPONDING to Chris...check it out again...

I am tempted to take away the anonymous capability, but then we wouldn't get to have any fun, right?

Ah no, don't defer to me by any means. What do I know!

Tomato- is it Toe-Mae-Toe or Toe-Mah-Toe?

Either- is it ee-ther or eye-ther?

perhaps therein lies your answer.

Yoga Chickie said...

Perhaps. Or is it an "irregardless" sort of thing?

SA MA STI TI HI

WOW YOGA CHICKIE SHUT THE F--- UP???

WHY ALL THE ANGER?

Yoga Chickie said...

No anger...I guess it was more of a private joke between me and myself...each year at the Manhattan New School Annual Auction, Judy Gold hams it up and shocks our bourgeois sensabilities with her amusing rantings ("Hey, you, cheapskate, you send your kids to public school, you can afford to bid a thousand bucks for that vacation in Miami!") and her "Shut the f--- ups"...sorry, no anger or offense intended!

Hi Lauren
When in doubt of the pronounciation of an asana I think of what Christopher called it. He is a sanskrit scholar and says the names of each asana beautifully and (most likely:) correctly.

Funny--different teachers say things differently and as I have studied with a few different teachers even the opening chant sounds different depending who is leading it.

Hey Beryl...I finally met Christopher, and he is great. I wish I could practice with him, but I know he wants a minimum four-day commitment, and the times don't work for me at Yoga Sutra (early morning and late afternoon...those are exactly the times I cannot practice!).

How incredibly lucky we are here in NYC to have such amazing choices for Ashtanga!!! It's an embarassment of riches!
