Quadratus Lumborum

So, I think this is what I injured...It is the muscle that secures the floating rib (the 12th rib)...now that makes sense, I think. It feels like a deep, deep pain, and it feels related to that 12th rib. So, hopefully, it is just a bruise to the muscle that secures the 12th rib.

According to the Anatomy Coloring Book: "the quadratus lumborum is an extensor of the lumbar vertebrae (bilateraly) and a lateral flexor unilaterally. It functions in respiration by securing the 12th rib."

Of course, it could just be the internal or external oblique muscles. Or a broken rib. But I really, really, really hope not.

Your cancer fears are understandable. Once the cancer door has been opened, it's easy for the mind to take us to those icky dark places when things like this happen. Really it sounds like a bruised muscle. I recommend that you stop with ashtanga for now. You're working really hard. Now is the time for restorative yoga in prep for your surgeries. :o)

I know, once in a while, the fear comes back all at once. And it's usually this time of year: it was my 3 year anniversary on Wednesday!

BTW, is that you, C? If so, did you start practicing? Fill me in!

I live by a duck pond. I used to live by the East River. I don't work. I used to work a lot. Now, not so much. I used to teach a lot of yoga. Now not so much. I still practice a lot of yoga though. A LOT. I love my kids, being outdoors, taking photos, reading magazines, writing and stirring the pot. Enjoy responsibly.
