Some backbending to heal the soul

Before walking in the hands (also, on self-timer)

After walking in the hands (and with the help of an 11 year old photog).

Dropback getting better. Standing up, not so strong today. Not feeling particularly strong today.

This is a response to the last few posts, your angst about needing to "go backwards" and Carl's comment (and your confusion) regarding yin yoga.

Maybe you're just tired and relentlessly beating yourself up. I'm going to translate this to runners terms: it's not healthy to stay in marathon training mode 365 days a year. Or 365 minus one day a week. Or month. Or whatever.

You begin by running your usual 20-25 miles/week, then ramp it up to a peak of 50 miles/week (or, if you're me, 35-40), you run the marathon, take a break for a week or two and then start again with those 20 mile weeks.

Of course it's possible to run a marathon, take a break for a day or two and then go right back into it and run another marathon in 3 weeks or 3 months or so. I have done both. Result? Injury and/or illness and/or poor performance. Cure? Backing off, setting more moderate goals and just being.

Can you translate that back into yoga terms?

I see your point, Deb. I feel like crap physically at the moment. I still haven't practiced today, and it looks like the best I am going to do is to rest and call it a "being kind to myself" kind of practice.

I wonder how to translate the marathon training schedule into yoga terms. It is kind of ridiculous when yoga starts to look more violent to the body than marathon training. That is just bass ackwards.

I live by a duck pond. I used to live by the East River. I don't work. I used to work a lot. Now, not so much. I used to teach a lot of yoga. Now not so much. I still practice a lot of yoga though. A LOT. I love my kids, being outdoors, taking photos, reading magazines, writing and stirring the pot. Enjoy responsibly.
