There are no words.

OH MY GOD. How is she even alive, let alone practicing yoga???

And yes, I saw this on another person's blog. So what.

I guess people are predisposed to certain body types, give or take a few pastries? Maybe she's of the naturally thin variety? Some people are thin but eat like horses.

I can assure you: this woman does not eat like a human, let alone a horse.

I know someone with the exact same body and the ability to do those poses too...she's a total anorexic/bulimic. Some say the yoga keeps her alive but how much can skin and bones held together by some tendons keep anyone going?!

PS and yogis like Kino Mcgregor are just as flexible and don't look like this Paddy woman!

I think some level of thinness, or rather, the absense of some level of girth, is very helpful in some poses and can take the place of true flexibility. This is true for me - not a truly very flexy person -I believe, as I have discussed ad nauseum. But thinness/lack of girth does nothing for backbends at all. I cannot imagine how it could. Perhaps the absence of any butt at all might make backbending until you are sitting on your own head easier, but other than that, I just don't see how one thing has anything to do with another.

As for Kino, yes, she is amazing, and she is very slim, but she is not just a gnarled piece of balsa wood. She is feminine looking, and her body looks soft when she's bending (as opposed to tensed and sinewy).

I don't ever want to be that thin.

I don't care if I can never do a decent backbend.

That video, I hate to say, gives yoga a bad name.

OK I know people come in all shapes and sizes but that surely is not normal. And I am a medical person.

That video gives yoga a bad name, yes, I agree. It might also give the impression that one has to be anorexically skinny in order to do the poses that she is doing. I can't believe that any yoga studio would have her as a guest teacher any more than they would have someone with Oprah's or Kirstie Alley's body as a guest teacher. Any extreme is unhealthy. I guess if Paddy McGrath were extremely overweight instead of extremely skinny, we might not be as horrified, or might not be as comfortable talking about it. But either extreme is unhealthy and reflects emotional eating issues to an extent that would make me uncomfortable trusting that person as a teacher.

Agreed.

Been watching the Krisnamachariya videos on Youtube this morning, he's pretty dammed skinny, as was SKPJ in those old pictures in Yoga Mala. Do we judge men by different criteria when it comes to this I wonder. Just listened to an interview with Paddy and she sounds pretty cool and together. has a lot of good things to say about the teacher inside us.

stick with it till the second half when she and the interviewer start warming up. has interesting things to say about Venkatesh and Scarinelli.

OUch, I did not think someone could be this skinny, I hope (for her sake) she is not suffering some wasting disease. If this would be my introduction video to Ashtanga, I would run the other direction,

It must tough when a persons demons are so easy to view. Other than a few grey hairs I could still be mistaken for Brad Pitt. You would never know by looking at me that I'm crazy.

Old Dude...WOW...that was such a spot-on observation that it made me catch my breath. Maybe that is why I have such a visceral reaction to the video...it is just so "in your face"...it makes me feel like I ought to be a lot more sympathetic about it...

Hey Grimmly...a couple of responses to your comment:

1. Men are built differently from women, and women rely on a certain amount of fat for their bodies to run smoothly. Fat is used by the adrenal glands to produce hormones that protect us women from heart disease and osteoporosis and I am sure other illnesses that I can't think of right now. I am sure that Paddy never menstruates and cannot bear children, which might be fine for her, but it is still not the "normal" state of things.

2. Krishnamacharya and SKPJ both look perfectly healthy in their skinnier days. They do not have bones sharply protruding through their clothing. They look totally different from the way Paddy M looks. For what it's worth, when I had the photo of Sharath on my front page, I got a lot of comment from friends (not via the blog) about "who the scary skinny guy is doing the weird thing with his ankles"...I had not considered his appearance to be scary skinny at all, which leads me to wonder if perhaps many of us Ashtangis tolerate a WIDE range of skinny before coming to the conclusion that someone we are observing is ill?

3. I am SURE that Paddy has lovely and enlightening things to say about the practice. The problem is not the message but the messenger, and not just her appearance but the freakish spazzy movements and repetetive bouncing in down dog and other poses...

Yeah--it's not just her skinniness; it's that she doesn't seem to be in her body. Compare her jitteriness to Kino's groundedness/calm in poses. Wow--wouldn't want to be that thin and vata.

Yeah I found that waving thing she does with her hands really irritating...

I am astounded at how skinny her body is but she has great flexibility in her body. If anything else, I would hope she continues yoga in such a way that it'll bring awareness to her present condition as her thin sihoulette is very concerning. Mindful practice for everyone.
