Rock Star Yoga

Is this how the world is to perceive R. Sharath? A rock star gazing impenetrably at the world, wearing nothing but a black diaper and a smirk?

Apparently.

I am, shall we say, non-plussed.

Nice pose, by the way, if you like the look of broken limbs.

Dear YC- Why, why, why so angry lately?

Sincerely, Concerned

I think it's like I'm in the adolescence of my yoga trajectory.

Where are your beautiful, funny, entertaining, jewels of blog postings? Lauren, You are disappointing me.
Enough about the Jois family, let the fanatics go to YKW's post, give me/us back Yoga Chickie! Ilonka

YKW?

Anyway...sorry guys...Ilonka, your comment further comfirms it for me, like holding up a mirror to myself. I am definitely in this angry adolescent mode. I hope it passes so that I can move into my quieter, more peaceful young adult mode....

I like the questioning...I mean.

Yoga Chickie said...

Which questioning, Susan? The questioning the Rock Star or the questioning of YC?

Ilonka...gonna blog about my garden shortly...

Frankly, I think he looks more like a criminal in a mug shot than a rock star.

I think a sexier picture of Sharath would be an MRI of his back, which the amazing Ashtanga Vinyasa practice has done apparent wonders for.

Yoga Chickie said...

I'm not sure I understand that last comment about Sharath's back. I assume that Ashtanga messed up his back? Is that the point you're making?

Anonymous said...

Ya, I was being sarcastic.

I don't know how/why at such a young age Sharath is suffering from back problems AFTER practicing yoga. I think he should go consult Mr Iyengar.........

Kali Om said...

I suspect that doing dropbacks with hundreds (thousands?) of students is what messed up his back.

Anonymous said...

yeah, sharath shredded his back... it's all over the blogs

Tracy said...

from what i understand, Sharath has not been able to practice for awhile now due to serious injury..wasn't sure if it was his back, but that must have been what happened. Seems as though this practice catches up with everyone sooner or later in an injurious way of some kind...Balance, that has always been my motto and i am sticking with it! :0)

Considering Mr Iyengar is 90yrs old and apparently still practices 3hrs daily, he must be doing something 'right' and Sharath is doing something 'wrong' to his body?

I can see us all wobbling to Iyengar classes as injuries catches up on us.

Both questions YC.

poor YC, she makes a bold statement about an ashtanga icon and her blog gets this same argument that's been going on all over.
basically even the most athletic practitioners have to change their practice as they age or face the consequences. but anytime someone does that within ashtanga, the purists get irate. one has to decide whether this perceived authenticity is worth the risk, especially as there is little more than anecdotal history to substantiate the truth of the current system being as old or pure as it's said to be.

I'm going to concur with C.K. on the back issue.....too much yoga teaching is hard on the body. Especially if your getting in there with many students every day. In my experience "doing" the practice doesn't injure you. That being said, if your ego is doing the practice, your done for.

Regarding the pose in the tour poster, I was exploring the other day. Sitting in Baddha konasana, just hanging out. Picked up one leg and started gently moving the soul of the foot toward the belly. It wasn't as bad as I thought. And I'm a stiff guy. That being said, watch out for your knees, please.

Blessings to Guruji.

I agree with Bhaktiyogin, after talking to a teacher about the injuri issue, , I was told, that assisting people, and especially in back bending is very hard on a teachers body, so be gentle with your teacher :-)
