"What drives my practice?" Is it to achieve certain poses, or to gratify the ego? Is it to have something noteworthy to blog aobut? Is it to "look good" within the Ashtangi community? Or is it something deeper?

To me, the body is not me, the body is not the practice, it is merely the vehicle through which the yoga moves. "Mastering" a pose is not necessarily a prerequisite to most teachers (Guy and Sharath included) and mastery of the pose does not guarantee you'll get the next one. There are other reasons. Some teachers want you to practice the complete primary series before moving you to second, some teachers will give you all the poses until Navasana, but will not move you along until you're competent in Mary D. Some teachers just want you to put in more face time...ect. No rules...just yoga.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13149662.post-20545493518277483972006-09-08T10:57:00.000-04:002006-09-08T10:57:00.000-04:00why go to a more traditional shala? because other...why go to a more traditional shala? because otherwise it becomes a free for all. with no direction or system to adhere to people gradually do whatever they want, practice only the poses they like to do and miss out on the many lessons to be learned. at some point it no longer is ashtanga.happy mama yogahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10261437872911899208noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13149662.post-68258855840071511052006-09-08T02:03:00.000-04:002006-09-08T02:03:00.000-04:00I'm sure I don't have to say it but it isn't about...I'm sure I don't have to say it but it isn't about Garbha Pindasana... and enjoy it now... soon you'll have a much lighter chest and then you'll see a difference and wonder what you were worried about. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13149662.post-34760686585626475852006-09-07T22:38:00.000-04:002006-09-07T22:38:00.000-04:00Hi YC,
I missed your blogging while you were out ...Hi YC,

I missed your blogging while you were out of the blogospere!

Well, perhaps I can add some Australian flavour to the question of whether a (certified/authorised) teacher would move you along... I have practiced in the mysore style with a couple of them here (Eileen Hall being probably the most noted)... Over the years I have noticed that, if students can bind with help (sometimes with a towel), they are moved on if they are not too exhausted at this stage - it doesn't matter if that bind is fleeting, if it is a struggle and incredibly ungraceful... I think that, based on your photos and your words, that you will get to this point (binding with help) sooner than you think... Maybe when you return to the shala and get the adjustments, you will see that you are actually getting closer.

And, maybe you can take comfort in the fact that you will ZOOM through the rest of primary from here on in!

As for dropping back - when does your teacher introduce that to students? All the teachers I have had have been quite different in their take on this - I have a bendy back and can't really rememeber where I was in the sequence when I started dropping back with assistance... Perhpas you would enjoy the shala again if you could work on that?

Hope you resolve your inner struggle. Namaste, Smd
ps. I have a blog now too!
http://salad.blogsource.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13149662.post-83734779779683332832006-09-07T22:25:00.000-04:002006-09-07T22:25:00.000-04:00Good post...you know, I get so attached to getting...Good post...you know, I get so attached to getting postures that I think it defeats the meaning. It took me a good 8 months before I bound in supta k. Just hang in there. :-)

You don't know why you go to the shala and I don't know why I can't do a self practice...lolTiffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13253894801085050348noreply@blogger.com
